Stephen Gandy over at CameraQuest has just published some bokeh test photos of the new Zeiss ZF (that's the Nikon F mount) 50/1.4 lens on his website. Now, Zeiss lenses have never really been known for their ability to render the out-of-focus area of an image in a pleasing manner...just ask anyone with a CZ 85mm lens on his Contax SLR...but I was expecting something a little better then this for the money. The highlights aren't controlled in the least and...well, check out the weird Starry Night rendering of the OOF area in the third photo down! Why does sharpness always seem to come at the cost of bokeh and vice-versa? It's almost like the tonality vs. contrast battle. Apparently, the "sharper then the medium will ever be" selling point does work though, regardless of the bokeh it produces. The first shipment of the ZF 50/1.4 to Gandy has already sold out .
