This thread discusses the Content article: A Tutorial on Hyperfocus Technique

First off I think you mean refraction rather than diffusion.

This assumes you want infinity to be in focus. You may not. say you just want everything between 2 - 5 metres in focus at f8. Then put the 5 m mark on the right hand f8 mark. This way you achieve zone focus.

No, not refraction...maybe "diffraction" ?

I think the effect is called "diffusion"...shine a flashlight through a hole in a piece of cardboard and the beam of light diffuses. Diffraction is the spreading of light outward due to distance.

I know hyperfocus is a type of scale-focusing. The article was addressing it specifically and not scale focusing in general.

Okay, it's "diffraction". I'm going to correct the article now.

Excellent though the article is, one thing omitted is the subject of photographing people. I always ask permission first from the people I want to photograph to make sure they don't object. Taking "candid " photos and getting caught could lead to all sorts of problems, violent or legal.
Years ago you could get away with taking street scenes with a person as the main subject, but those days are long gone.
By all means take streeet scenes but make sure that no specfic person can be recognisable.

Not if you are in Taiwan or the U.S. and are standing on public property. In the US especially, there have been legal tests on this. If you are on private property, you need only the permission of the owner of that property.

This applies to educational, editorial, or fine art usage only.

Commercial use is a completely different story.

In the UK where I am there has been much discussion on the subject and the general rule of thumb is to get permission first to avoid legal problems
