Thinking about the VC II lightmeter.... 1 Year, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
Any advice?

Thinking of using it for my Zorki 4/Jupiter-8 (does it fit on the "shoe" or should I put it on a strap?)--and prolly on this new/old Leica CL that picked up off *bay with a dead meter.

'Course I could use it as a backup on the R3A as well, I guess, which is my primary "fun"/self-use camera.....

I have this meter and it is great! I use it on a Leica IIf and unmetered Leica m bodies, and before, on a CL with a dead internal meter. It does have an annoying tendency for the ISO dial to move off the set ISO. This meter as well as the CV 50mm viewfinder really make those old classic cameras more useable.

I'm sure it is great, and I thought of getting one too, but in the end, I settle for the Gossen Digisix. It also can be purchased with an (optional) accessory shoe adapter. It reads out (digital LCD readout) in EV, which I like for my many ancient LVS-oriented rangefinders. Of course, the VC II would work better for a camera that has direct shutter-speed and aperture settings. The Digisix has drawbacks, but overall, I'm pleased.

I considered a getting a VC-II about 2 months ago. I elected to get a Sekonic L-208 instead. I've seen a VC-II meter and it seems better made than my Sekonic and looks nicer too. However, my Sekonic can do both incident and reflective metering and it was quite inexpensive being under $100 USD. It's very small about 1 inch thick, maybe 2 inches wide and 2.5 inches long. It can also be mounted on an accessory shoe though it looks weird on top of a camera. The accessory shoe adaptor is included and it is held in place by a few tiny screws. I elected not to put it on since it increases the thickness of the light meter by about 1/2 inch. Doesn't seem like much but it feels much bigger in my pocket. Also included is a nice little storage pouch. The Sekonic L-208 is a permanent travel companion for my Zorki 1c. It's very easy and quick to use. Just set the ISO, hit a button, turn the knob to match the need indicator and I get the EV along with the aperture and shutter-speed combinations.

Nothing wrong with the VC-II meter. I really like it but I thought that the Sekonic L-208 was better for my needs.

I used to "borrow" a friends VC I lightmeter to use on a Kiev 4am and had no problems with it whatsoever.

Now-a-days I really only use an external meter when shooting medium format, so I picked up a used Minolta Flashmeter IV.

If you don't want to hold a meter in your hand, then get the VCII.

A little followup---I emailed the seller and let him know about the battery, asked what the return/refund policy was in addition to offering to settle up with a partial refund instead of full return/refund. He refunded a nice portion of the purchase price--enough for a lightmeter!

So, after all your great advice and comments, I decided on the Sekonic 208--I know it's not C-V but this started out as C-V products question.

Thanks all.
