This has happened to several Bessa R owners: you advance the film too quickly after releasing the shutter and suddenly everything locks up: you can advance the film and you can't fire the shutter.

The fix is very easy, but involves removing the bottom cover. Here is a link to photos to show you how to do it:

Hey guys,
My Bessa R locked up just like you said, but when I removed the bottom plate, the long grey bar was still in place. I can depress the shutter release all the way down but nothing happens. Any ideas?

I don't know what else it could be. It really sounds like the same problem. When you had the bottom off, did you make sure that the grey bar was correctly seated? Mine hadn't come all the way off, it was just a little bit out of place. Maybe take another look make sure it is correctly seated. I don't know what else it could be, but if you figure it out, please post it here or on the Bessa repair wiki.
