But that would also mean the same low max shutter speed as Leica

Well, 1/1000 is enuff - for me...I am sad because I only have money for 20 years old Kiev(25 euros in Serbia)... Taking photos at low light, at night, at places where noise must be at zero( like in church ),that is what I need. When I saw Bessa R for 250$(CameraQuest), I thought:It's crazy, but I must take credit in bank and take it!Then, RFF members told me that Bessa is louder than my old Kiev. What a pitty!
I will be happy when some camera manufaturer will be smart enuff to see that 200-300$(like Bessa R)simple (but with quiet and shakeless shutter) body will be best sale wide world... Regards!
Vladimir, r.f. camera lover ... till the end of 35mm film era.

Having a focal plane shutter in the form of blinds rolling on and off rollers, which means all cloth shutters, the classic Contax CRF "tambour" shutter and metal-foil shutter as in later Nikon reflexes, means that the shutter mechanism is much more entrenched within the whole chassis of the camera. Cosina would need to spend a great deal of money and labour to develop such a shutter and that will impact on the cost of the camera.

One thing that made the SLR boom of the 60s and 70s was the availablity of the Copal Square shutter, pretty much a self-contained proprietary unit. The camera manufacturer just needed to bolt it into the chassis and that's about it. Cosina has always relied on a shutter like that, and even more so when the advent of the Bessa. Knowing the comparatively small production numbers, it would be commercial suicide if Cosina is to develop a roller-type shutter just for the sake of quietness.

Thank you for post.I use SLR , too.My father was pro.photographer - I have his Mamiya Sekor 500DTL.It's fine camera, but compare to Kiev4 it's too noisy... I am taking phtos only 2-3 years and I don't know abot camera's history( something like 30 years old elementary school pupil).Theese days book about rangefinder cameras will came to me from America ... one thing I know for sure... I need quiet camera. Even on CameraQuest phrase for quiet is ''leica quiet''.If it is not so important, why they put high price because of that advantage? Regards.
